The essay below was first published in April 2015 in Asia Times Online, and reprinted by the Middle East Forum. Often the choice about war isn’t whether or not, but sooner or later. By taking preemptive action in the form of a targeted assassination of a top Iranian general, President Trump may have pre-empted far worse conflict in the future. Of course it is a risk, but it is a well-calculated one.
