Despite eased mask recommendations from the federal government and increasing vaccination rates, don’t expect the Oregon Capitol to reopen to the public anytime.

The building was closed last spring amid rising cases of COVID-19 and has remained closed through multiple special sessions as well as the entire 2021 legislative session to date. The United States Supreme Court just announced that it will take up a Mississippi abortion case that could potentially affect the so-called right to abortion in the entire country and blue checks on Twitter are giving their doom and gloom responses. SCOTUS announced on May 17 that it would provide a ruling on a controversial abortion ban from the state of Mississippi and hear the case next fall. The Mississippi law – passed in 2018 but blocked by lower courts – banned all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A group of House Republicans protested the chamber’s mask mandate on the floor on Tuesday afternoon. Speaker Pelosi has not yet updated guidance on mask-wearing on the House floor, despite the new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that says that fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks. Not all House members have been vaccinated.

The lawmakers likened mask mandates to “oppression” and a “political tool” and refused to comply with the mandate, even in light of the $500 fine for violating the policy. More…

Two out of three Deschutes County commissioners signed a letter asking Gov. Kate Brown to reconsider the restrictions that will again be placed on restaurants as more counties move into the extreme risk category.

The letter, which was written by the Association of Oregon Counties and the Oregon Restaurant & Lodging Association, was signed by about 80 county commissioners across the state, including Commission Chair Tony DeBone and Commissioner Patti Adair. More…
